My Own Creative Process

Creativity is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the your comfort zone and fearlessly jump into the unknown , listen to the calling of your muse and follow her voice . What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.
I always try to remember these sage words when I tackle a new class or a new project. And when I am learning something new I also try to remind myself that experts are not born, they are made. I also believe that we all start from the beginning each time we create.. That at one time they too were beginners, filled with self doubt, left wondering if they would ever learn whatever task it was they set out to learn.
If I have a passion to truly learn something then I have to also learn to set aside my need for instant gratification and experience some discomfort in order to come out on the other side. And boy can that be difficult because our own self critic is a darn hard taskmaster.
So as you start this new year, if you are on a journey to discover the creativity that resides within, be nice to yourself, give yourself the gift of the time necessary to make that discovery. lock up that critic.
Creativity is an amazing, exciting journey if you just take that one step. One step is after all the beginning of a journey and each stone makes up a mountain, each drop of water an ocean. Jump into the unknown and you will find your creative wings.

This is a process where I began by experimenting with the Shrink Plastic technique. I was inspired by one of the members in the Art Swap who sent us a how to video. I decided to try it out just for fun. Here is what I experienced during the creative process and the resulting pins.

I created this piece with painted and altered Eco Plastic. After I painted the plastic, I used the heat gun to transform the material into a wood effect. I also added glitter to the surface as well as a piece of lichen that I found one morning on my walk. I made the face out of plastic also. I wanted to give the effect in this piece of jewelry as if were created by ancient artists.

Plastic is Beautiful

. I save my plastic in bins inmy studio basement and paint it as I go sometimes with just paintthat I have left over from painting projects in my classes I am readyto do a project I use either a blow dryer or a heat-gun depending onwhat I want to do and what kind of plastic I am using..When I use the heat gun on the plastic, I alwayshave ventilation and most of the time I do my work outside. But I atleast have a window or even a door open They allchange in unique ways and create different effects.. I haveexperimented to discover how the plastic transforms and now eventhough I am open to the unexpected and there are always those in thecreative process, I now work with it with purpose and a method thathave improved upon in time. Plastic is a wonderful material forartists to use and I am just one among many who working with plasticas a resource in their work.After the pin piece is finished I use a variety of foundobjects sometimes entrapping them in the melted plastic and othertimes glued. I have used anything that I have in my stash as long asit is small enough for the piece of jewelry. I have the goal ofcreating something from the plastic that looks ancient or natural. Ialso use metallic and iridescent paint to enhance the piece. It is avery organic and intuitive process when I make my jewelry. I neverreally know what the results going to be. As I create a storyemerges/ The story defines the piece and becomes he name of myjewelry pieces. It's all very magical and when I hold the piece it ismuch like it came through me and is brought to life
I love the idea of bringing something to life or giving a new lifeto ordinary material and watching the alchemy of the creative processform. I also believe as an artist, it is my way to take somethingheaded for the landfill and make it into something beautiful.

I was inspired to start working with plastic when I was listeningto a podcast where two artists were talking about how they hadstarted when they were cleaning up the ocean of plastic. Because theywere artists, they started looking at the material as resources fortheir art
As I was listening, I started thinking how I could use plastic inmy own work. I already use a lot of recyclables in my art so Istarted collecting all kinds of plastic not really knowing what I wasgoing to do with it even though somehow I knew I would createjewelry. Luckily, I have a wonderful husband who understands me as anartist and a basement in my studio for all my material... I paintedthe plastic first with leftover paint from my classes and justwaited for the inspiration.... One day I was painting anddrying some cups that were made from cornstarch and suddenly Isaw the plastic changing form, softening, and transforming intoalmost a fabric or clay. I started cutting and forming the softplastic... Well after that I begin to experiment with other types ofplastic... each had their own way of transforming... I even made asculpture out of a plastic painted pop bottle and earnings out of milk bottle plastic. As I worked with the plastic, I began to use itas an art material and even used other things in the plastic. Ihave since created a whole series of Plastic is Beautiful jewelry andcontinue to consciously work and experiment exploring the materialfurther, I believe just as ancient artist used material that theyfound to create their art, we as artist can use plastic as magicaland wonderful resources for our art. It is a way to transformsomething ordinary into something beautiful as well as make astatement for the earth...

made with altered Eco Plastic that I painted in various washes of iridescent and metallic paints. I used a heat gun to melt and transform the plastic into the look of mineral and embedded a Lapis Lazuli in the center symbolic of God's All Seeing Eye

I used the Eco Plastic to create a wood like effect added one of Wise Woman faces and moss. She symbolizes Mother Nature Gaia Goddess of the earth

Morning Pages with Jamie

I did my morning pages and I actually wrote several pages before quiting. I was working on an idea and trying to resolve a conflict about where I should submit my art and whether I wanted to go with the exclusivity policy that artist Gallery has or stay independent and explore other possibilities. I foud that using the journal and writing out my thoughts really helped me to clairify what I want to do. Before, I was going back and forth but not really making a decision. I know that journaling is a powerful method for resolving issues.

But I also wrote about how I was feeling with the injury of my back. I was really depressed because it brings up memories of the multiple sclerosis and what I went through in the past feeling of helplessness and also the fear of growing old and being in that position again. Not being able to continue with my work both as a teacher and as an artist, having to make a change that comes with growing old is something that will happen eventually and it is times like this that gives me the opportunity to reflect on my life now and think about what I would do. Also hurting my back has really shown me that I need to not overdo and try to take on more than I can handle ie over stressing. It is difficult for me to slow down so my body has made me slow down. Anyway, It is these times that be used as wake up calls to what is really important one more project to get done or my health....

Timeless Moments

I am really going to be more disciplined this year and try to use my journal as a place for self exploring. I have journal for years and do find it a valuable tool although it seems a little moor of a challenge for me to focus because so much is going on. I like the idea of using my blog as space for my thoughts as well even though I agree with Jamie as well as Julia Cameron that writing morning pages is much more productive in the thought process. However because I am becoming more digital I like both ides and plan to use both in my own journaling process. I don't know where this is going because when I start writing it is very similar to when I do my art and especially collage. It is very intuitive...

My wish for this year is to hear the inner Wisdom that speaks to me in the gentle silence of my self, to slow down long enough to "see the vision of good and hear what She is saying to me. To "know the sacred in every moment and to "be"in the center where all things rest in her arms.

There is a part of me that is the Knower of all
things and when I am ready to remember, Wisdom is there waiting to be tapped into.

In this season of preparation, of challenging old beliefs that bind me to the past, there is a calling in me to live the Wisdom, which is deep within.

It is that Wisdom, which leads me to the place that I need to be and calls me to climb the next mountain: to spread my wings: to forge the unknown landscapes.

It is that Wisdom which tells me to listen to my own being and hear the voice of authenticity, to act according to my own truth.

It is that Wisdom, which says that life is a journey and that I am being brought forth on that journey to find what is Truth: to seek love and peace on my Life Path.

It is that wonderful Wisdom that gives me the eyes to see, the ears to hear, and a new vision to live.

I listen to my inner Wisdom as it speaks and I heed Her calling which whispers and tells me to prepare for something new: brings me a new vision, new hope, and a new promise.

What do I wish to nourish? It is a thought provoking question for me a this time! I seemed to be very busy in my wonderful and creative studio doing, doing, doing. I know the importance of connecting and centering in my Being Self. I realize that I need to stop spinning and quiet myself in the inner sanctuary. I can hear the call of my Monastic Self whispering to me. Yet my doing nature does not take the time to simply sit silently and listen. Sharon demonstrates to the group how to do creative image altering with ordinary materials. We found interesting images from National Geographic, Fashion and American Heritage and used Citrasol, a natural cleaning fluid, to rub out the negative space around the images. It was a wonderful method for creating a surface to begin a unique piece of art. Next week she demonstrate how to use bees wax to cover the images and give a transparent effect. We will finish the artwork in with other media for color and stain and talk about our creative process...

Title- We are One Hand (Originally called Last Marks of Mankind)

Concepts- The idea that we are all uniquely different and the same connected by our own humanity. We all have hands but are individual creations of the Divine Creator. It also reminded me of the hand prints created by ancient artists who imprinted their hands on the wall of the cave. I found myself wondering why they felt moved to do that and in some way I was doing the same except on a canvas. The cave walls were their canvas and they were the first artists.
The idea of the painting actually came from a process that I did with my women’s group. We had been working with a book Women Who Run with the Wolves and finishing up with the last chapter. I am the facilitator of the art and the theme in the chapter was hands. I was inspired one morning when meditating. I saw a hand. I often receive my ideas during my meditations and receive imagery. At first I was going to have the women do a cast from their hands or even use a glove to make hand casts. But that was not really practical with the time limit that I had. It was then while writing in creative journal. I keep one for my creative ideas and process) I had the inspiration do have the women draw their own hands like we did as children. They did designs and painted them. They used the hands as a process for reflection and we shared the importance of our hands in our group. The next day I had painted over a collage and it was on the easel. I decided to draw around my own hands and do individual designs on each one. I also wanted to have shapes made by connecting the hands. It was not until the next day that the painting revealed itself to me. This often happens in my work. I started painting the designs on the hands but did not like the painted effect. I did not want it to look like a painting but at the time not know why. I worked on the painting non stop all day. It was one of those creative frenzies that I have had before in other artwork that I have done. I really did not know intellectually where the painting was going but I trust my own process even when on an intellectual I do not understand. I just painting and I worked until it was when I had the revelation a vision. I could even see a story the painting was telling. I saw group of people huddled in a mountain. Something disastrous had happened to the earth. They were from different races and religions male and female. They were consciously aware that they were dying. They reached out to each other because they had to touch even if it were just their hands and suddenly they were conscious of their last thought, Why did it take us so long to get that we are really not separate. We are one….. When this revelation came, it frightened me because of its message and meaning but I also knew it came through me and not from me and had to be created.. The last thing that I did in the [painting to finish it was create a texture to represent a cave. I used joint compound, let it dry, painted stone color wash over that and then rubbed charcoal over the relief. When that was dry, I used an iridescent paint to represent the illumination of the dying people and the light of their united souls. When the painting was done, I looked at it and knew that it was saying what I wanted to say not to everyone and the name was a bit too real so I changed the title to "We are One Hand"

Symbols- Hands and the design that the hands create both in the positive and negative shapes. I wanted contrasting symbols each hand was different in the repeating shapes of the hands in different positions on the canvas. The symbols on the hands represented different people all different with their race and religion and gender. The emotion to begin with was a sense of unity being connected love. But as the painting revealed itself to me, the hands were desperately reaching out to each other and therefore the emotions changed to sadness but also hope as well as connectedness and love a very powerful emotion but also terrifying. The thought Are we too late?

Have I accomplished what I wanted in the painting? Will I now try to sell it? Does art need to be a product or is it something that simply needs to be created?

The question I ask myself is what wills future civilizations say about us if there is a future. Did print?
the first artists who printed their hands on the cave walls consciously hoping that someday the prints would be found by people in the future or were they simply fascinated by their own hand

If we knew how to make ourselves well, we would almost certainly do so. The great gift of the Goddess is such a healing. To the individual, She brings personal well being and an experience of fully living. To humanity, She could bring the harmony that comes with the recognition that we are all connected in spirit, to this planet. We depend upon it for survival and we owe it the gift of life.

This is a fiber collage that I did as a tribute to Henri Matisse and his use of bright colors, patterns and his odalisque in "Decorative Figure on an Ornamental Background"I did the fabric figure first as a sketch. I was experimenting with making doll bodies at the time so I stuffed the figure to give it dimention. I painted the background, and used different patterns from fabric pieces to get the effect of ornamental pillows on a couch. I used gauzy material over the figure to give her the look of sudduction. I also used black thread for her long sensous hair. I used , irridescent threads and fiber to look like the night outside of a window and to give the piece mystery. I hand pieced and stitched the fabric and did decorative and motion embroidery in the background to give it texture. The odalisque represents the sudductive sensuous femenine/ the Goddess in all women. I love Matisse and during this time I painted several odalisques in various media. This is the only one that I did in fibers. The others I did in pastel, oil, watercolor, and acrylics as well as paencil and pen and ink.. Some of which I will use in future fiberart and show here.

These are some of the photos that I took when I stood in front of the church in Auvers. There was a print standing on an easel of the same painting that Van Gogh did as he saw the church in his own eyes. I felt great tenderness and honor standing there in the same spot that he might have stood while he painted.

This is a photo of the painting of the church in Auvers that Van Gogh did in the last days of his life. I stood in front of the church and actually saw what he did when he chose this church as a subject for his painting. It is a beautiful old church in the town of Auvers not far from where he lived. I wondered if he actually went to the church and that is the reason why he painted it. I took close up shots of it from different areas. I thought that I saw birds that looked like crows flying over the steeple. I am working on a painting a translation of the church. I feel so lucky that I got to see this beutiful little church and I will never look at this painting in the same way again.

My Trip to Auvers

This is a collage that I did from my trip to Auvers where Van Gogh lived and painted in the last 75 days of his life. I took photos from in front the house that he stayed. This is a real photo of a photo of him when he was 19 years old. Even then he had a haunted hungry look in his eyes. I also saw where he and his brother Theo were buried and took a close up of a sunflower that was on their grave as well as one of the paintings of the church that he did in Auvers. I actually stood in front of the church and took a lot of zoomed in photos of it. I am planning on doing a painting from the church photos. I altered the photos and used them in this collage.I will be doing a whole series of paintings collage and pen and ink drawings of my trip to Auvers as a part of this series..

Paris Through My Eyes

This is a collage that I did from altered photos from my trip to Paris.The image of the abstract face is one of my own paintings. I also used words from a book that I found in a bookstore in Paris.. I did this collage as a special piece from my memory of the magic of Paris.I spent ten wonderful days in an old section of the city across from the Seine River where Monet did his paintings. I am also doing another series of my trip to Giverney, Auvers and Montmartre. The artwork will be a combination of fiberart, collage, drawings and pintings.

Hand Painted Chair

This is a chair that I altered. The chair already had a canvas back that was a perfect painting surface. . I used one of my own face designs drew it in marker and then painted it in acrylics. The theme was a princess chair for a teenagers room. I did the chair with the idea that everyone deserves to be a princess sometimes. It was auctioned to raise money as a part of a scholarship fundraiser for Proformance Dance.

This is an example of the fiberart that I am doing for the Fiberart for a Cause in Chicago to help raise money for cancer prevention in April. I used various techniques including mixed media, manipulative fabric, collage, machine embroidery, hand stitching and beading. The themes also vary. Some are my own drawings collage and paintings photo transfered onto fabric hand dyed fabric. I love to try different mixed media and fiber techniques in small pieces of my art.

This is Tiffany the Christmas fairy who lives in the Forest. She is a beautiful little fairy who has special powers and can turn anything that she touches with her wand into crystals and spreads winter magic that you can only see if you close your eyes.

I started with a bendi doll made out of cloth. I then began drawing in the face and doing the hair which was hand sewn one strand at a time. I used different material such as pieced and manipulated fabric and fibers collaged on water soluble stabilizer to make her skirt and she has a blouse made from hand dyed silk.. I made the fairy wings and crown out of fabric stiffened with glue, acrylic paint, shimmery nail polish and glitter. I also created the embellishments out of pieces of water soluble stabilizer and fibers. Her necklace is hand beaded fibers.. I used rainbow dyed ribbon for her shoes.

Here I am painting in my back yard last spring. The flowers were absolutely vibrant with color. I did a small watercolor of what I saw. The vibrant colors reminded me of when I went to Paris and saw Giverney and Monet's gardens. Later on I created a fiber piece in thread called Garden in Thread.
